CITY OF NEWARK, DELAWARE
RENAMING THE YORKSHIRE WOODS PARK TO THE
WHEREAS, Douglas Dwight Alley, a member of Alpha Company, 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 5th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, was killed in action in Vietnam near Cu Chi, on February 26, 1966, being the sixth Delawarean to be killed in the line of duty in Vietnam; and WHEREAS, a street in the subdivision of the Woods of Yorkshire was named Douglas D. Alley Drive to honor and memorialize Pfc. Alley's life, service, and death for his country, and WHEREAS, the residents of Douglas D. Alley Drive wish to further honor Pfc. Alley for his service and ultimate sacrifice by changing the name of Yorkshire Woods Park to the Douglas Dwight Alley Park and have requested Council to consider such recommendation; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Newark, Delaware, in recognition of Pfc. Alley's bravery and sacrifice, hereby change the name of the Yorkshire Woods Park to the Douglas Dwight Alley Park in order to honor and memorialize the bravery of Pfc. Alley and over 58,000 other Americans who lost their lives during the Vietnam War. RESOLVED at a Regular Meeting of Council on June 11, 2001. VOTE: 7 to 0.
