Welcome Home Ball Ft. Wainwright Alaska 5/11/12

Bobcats,

In April 2012, The First Battalion, Fifth Infantry, will return from Afghanistan to Fort Wainwright, Alaska. They are planning a ball for them shortly after their return. This event is scheduled for May 11, 2012, at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks. It is estimated that about 700 people will attend and the cost is $30,000. Recalling the type of reception that Korea veterans and Viet Nam veterans received when returning home, I am confident you will, as I do, want to ensure they are treated with the honor and respect they deserve.

If you wish to make a contribution in support of our returning soldiers, here is a suggested level of giving. No contribution is too small or to large. Let us help welcome our heros in a way we didn’t experience.

Every year the 5th Infantry Chapter donates money that is raised to support many worth while causes, to name a few

IRAQI COIN PROJECT

As many of you know we had a project selling copies of a 1/5th Challenge Coin that was presented to soldiers in Iraq Jim Cuthbertson volunteered to head the project. He did a fantastic job and was able to sell all 325 coins that were ordered. In fact we had requests that mean we could have sold more. The coins were priced to make a profit and we ended up making $1,132.72. The Board of Directors voted to donate $600.00 of that money to the 1/5th “Family Readiness Group” for their welcome home activities for the Bobcats. We used some of the other profit to pay for the busses to transport members to the memorial service in downtown Pittsburgh at the recent reunion.

The Chapter owes Jim Cuthbertson a big “thanks” for his efforts on this project.

Regarding this donation we received the following E-mail from 1/5th CSM Victor Mercado.

DID YOU KNOW?

That the last newsletter cost about $1.03 each to have published. And “bulk mail” cost about $0.23 each to mail. So each newsletter cost about $1.25 cents. That is where the Chapter spends most of the dues you pay.

Fred,

 Awesome!!!

I want to personally thank you and the members of this excellent chapter for all the support. My soldiers and families really appreciate everything you all do for us. We can't thank you enough for all the care packages and emails. You really made our day! Take care and stay safe.
